How to: Fix sound on a DELL XPS 15 Ubuntu 10.04
First off start up a Terminal session (CTRL+ALT+T).
I only tested this solution on the kernel 2.6.32.40.
Start off by removing the old alsa-base and alsa-utils by using this command :
sudo apt-get remove alsa-base alsa-utils
After you’ve done that start download the Realtek drivers for the 2.6 kernel of Linux and download them to your Desktop.
Down below are on the website of Realtek are the mirrors.
Unpack the .tar.bz2 on your Desktop for example and after go to that directory with your terminal.
cd ~/Desktop
Now go into that directory and use the command :
sudo ./install
This will install all the drivers that are required for your sound to get working.
When that process is done restart your laptop and see if the sound is working.
If your sound is too high on bootup you can adjust it using the command
sudo apt-get install alsa-base alsa-utils
sudo alsamixer
adjust it with your fn F11/F12 keys to around 40% dB.
Press ESC to exit and use the command
sudo alsactl store 0
And reboot!
